London XI: quando Londra schierò una sola squadra

Fu l’unica volta che Londra ebbe una sola squadra a rappresentarla. In occassione della prima Coppa delle Fiere, iniziata nel 1955 e finita nel 1958, il regolamente prevedeva che una sola squadra poteva rappresentare una città. Vennero scelte le maggiori città fieristiche europee. Dato che Londra aveva più di una squadra e non si trovò chi mandare, si decise di unirle tutte e creare il London XI. Si presero i migliori giocatori che le squadre di Londra offrivano. Gestita dal Presidente del Chelsea, Joe Mears, i londinesi vinsero il loro girone, superando Basile XI e Francoforte XI. In semifinale se la videro col Losanna, superandolo. Mentre in finale si arresero al doppio confronto col Barcellona XI.

  1. Peccato solo che in due giorni un paio di squadre rinunciò! Comunque c’ è chi la snobba, ma a vedere certi match nelle varie edizioni la coppa delle fiere era una coppa bella tosta!
